Cosplay Storage Tips

Costumes are super amazing. They are a creative outlet that often combines with social events. I personally love getting to plan and figure out how to make the costume, then I like when things go to plan as I'm making the costume, and finally I love wearing it and show it to other people. I like to wear costumes to a wide variety of events and currently make several new costumes a year (even with college). Over time I have built up quite the collection of costumes and accessories, (these two pictures are from my recent costume sorting day, don't worry I got rid of like a trash bag full of stuff)

and storing them can be difficult. So here's a few things I've been doing for my costumes.

1) Sort Costumes (Every Piece!)
If dumping them all on the floor helps, do it, but I pulled out the costumes one at a time and made piles by category (Yes, there is a system in the above photos, lol). Hanging off my bed are mainly my formal dresses. Yes, that big white thing is one of two wedding dresses that I own. I paid $6 for it at the Goodwill. Some other categories were: Cosplay Costumes (from movies, shows, etc.), Complete Costumes, Military Costumes, Jackets, Shirts, Wigs, Accessories/Jewelry, Hair/Makeup, Seasonal (further broken down by Holiday), etc.
Make sure that whole costumes get put together. Don't leave Thor without his cape just because you have some other random capes. Put each costume completely together. Sometimes costumes do share pieces so just do your best, perhaps prioritize the costume you will reuse more regularly over one you might not wear for a while (and you can always leave a not of what each costume needs as I'll discuss more below).

2) Bag & Tag
Once costumes have been all put together or been put together with other things of their type (like shirts or jackets), bag each costume or category individually. I use a lot of ziplocs, some store bought costume bags (you know, the ones with the plastic buttons), comforter and sheet bags, and for my military costumes I put them in the military backpack I'd purchased.
St. Patrick's Day Costume in Ziploc:
20s Costume in an old costume bag:

I say bag them individually, but use your own discretion. For example, I had bigger bags and smaller bags. I gave Zelda and Thor each in their own smaller bag, but I had several Star Wars costumes, so I put them all in a bigger bag since they would fit and I needed the smaller bags for other costumes that didn't fit in a category like all the Star Wars ones.
Thor (Minus the cape which is being used for a different costume at the moment):
Star Wars Costumes (There's about 4 costumes and a few accessories in that bag):
If you want, a beneficial practice that I've just started to do is to "Tag" the costume. Tag it with the name of the character or category and then list the things that are in the bag, the things that aren't, and perhpas the things packed separately from the costume (ex. – I would list black pants on most of my costumes as not in the bag since I have one pair that stays in my dresser and I use them for daily life and the majority of my costumes, and Mjolnir would be packed separately from Thor because it's too big for the bag). You can easily tag them by writing on a sticky and taping it to the inside or outside of the costume bag. Ziplocs also have a white space to write on so that is wear I would write the character name:
Dream Costume (Yeah, I wrote earrings twice lol):

3) Separate by Priority/The Closet Bin
There are certain costumes you are going to wear throughout the year for events, and there are some you might not touch for several years. Personally, I wear the majority of my costumes to once-a-month theme nights at my church's children's program. A decent percentage of those theme nights are aligned to the holidays, so I have seasonal accessories and outfits that I want to be close at hand (in my Closet Bin) instead of in a storage container. So my St. Patrick's, Valentine's, 4th of July, Easter, Halloween (sorry *cough,* Fall Festival :}), and Christmas stuff is kept in a 10x10x10 square bin from Walmart in my closet. It also has a bag of various accessories like jewelry that I may need, and a bag of accessories for "glow/neon night" (like glow sticks, led lights, and etc.).
That's just me though, you might not need seasonal stuff to be close at hand like me, and maybe you just have a couple costumes that you use regularly and you want those to be in your Closet Bin.
Once you've sorted out the costumes and where they are going (and maybe some stuff you don't need anymore that can get sold or donated), you'll need to sort out the storage situation.

4) Storing Costumes
Once the costumes are bagged, I recommend a storage tub with a lid. Be advised to think about the climate of your home and the climate of the area you live in. For me, it gets pretty hot in the summer, and the silver glitter tape I used for my Thor helmet had melted onto the faux leather snout I'd made for my Imperial Spy costume, lol (Thor was fine but I don't think I'll be able to use the faux snout again, too much glitter remained stuck on the leather).
Putting the costumes in bags is a great way to save some space because it creates easy and flat shapes that can be stack on top of each other. There is about 14 or so full costumes in this green bin, a bunch of accessory/prop type things, the Jackets category, and I don't remember what's in the black bag on the bottom haha. (That is included the two bags that go on top of those costumes in the bin that can be seen to the left of the box):

My costumes go on a shelf in the garage usually, I don't let them go up in the attic cause they won't come back down for a while and some pieces might really not like the heat from summer.

So there is a few costume storing tricks. I'm to the point where I need to organize them because I have two tubs and my Closet Bin going lol. Hope this was cool and/or helpful! Let me know if you have a favorite costume you've worn in the comments. I particularly love my Jay from Ninjago costume, my Costco sample lady and Dominoes Pizza costumes, as well as my Star Wars Darth Maul and Jedi Costumes. . . and Thor!. . . Let's be real I love them all!

My Little Hair Salon. . . For Ponies

I think we know where this is going. . .

So, I had like, ALL the G3 My Little Ponies as a kid in the 2000s. G3 stands for Generation 3, so basically it was the 3rd series of My Little Pony toys released. Here's an example:

G3 Rainbow Dash:

So I had, like all the ponies (not really lol but a lot), and I kept them all in this Rainbow Dash backpack that I can't find a picture of. Not even under the list of all the rainbow dash merchandise. Or even ebay. AGGHHHH. But basically it was a Rainbow Dash Backpack that had wheels and a handle like on a suitcase. And in it was alllll my ponies. Now, eventually I got rid of them because I was kind of done with them, and my mom thought, we could always get more, but then it all changed and they stopped making the good ones. Thankfully I saved my favorites and my castle. Here's my castle and the stock photos of my favs. I saved:

So basically, we regret getting rid of them, because they stopped making them. So recently, we saw the thrift store had a bunch of them, so we bought them. And then the good ol COV happened so my hobby was ebay shopping for ponies. But of course, if you've had a g3 Pony, you know that their hair doesn't last long, even with a kid like me who took really good care of toys. So I made myself a hair salon in my living room and worked on the ponies while watching I Love Lucy with my mom. So I tried to take some before and after (and during) pictures:

 Desert Rose

Daffidazey

Rainbow Flash

Cotton Candy

Tea Leaf

Pinkie Pie

Winterberry

Strawberry Surprise

Sweetberry

Butter Pop

So you must be wondering what my secret techniques are. The magical ways in which I remove the marks on the ponies and tame their wild hair. It's not really a secret. For the hair I just use shampoo and conditioner to clean and detangle the hair. Use a strong wire brush and if you're really struggling to detangle the hair, brush it while the conditioner is in. Use clips, bobby pins, pencils, etc. to curl the hair if desired. Some ponies will have completely frizzed hair, and at that point the best thing you can do is braid the hair like I did with this extra Rainbow Flash:

For the marks, I use a liquid soft scrub with oxi cleaner that can be seen in the background of this picture:
I just squirt a little into that little red ceramic dish and scrub the ponies with a toothbrush. It doesn't remove everything, as you can see by the pink on Winterberry's chest:

But it will take away certain marks really good (the ones that haven't bleed into the pony like in Winterberry's case):

If you know anything about My Little Pony, please indulge me by commenting your favorite pony below. Mine are Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash. Some of the final photos were from a photoshoot I did with all the finished ponies, and I think I'll try and post some of the other photos at some point, there were a lot of good ones.

2022. . . Is Half Over

2022 has thus far been a pretty good year. I've been busy with college, but it's been an amazing experience. I'm on summer break now, and have been readjusting lately (and getting a cold and rolling my ankle didn't really help that lol). For my 2021 recap I just have a few things.

2021's Movies:

Big was fine, it was funny:)

Not my cup of tea, but a classic movie.

Again, not my style, but now I've seen it.

K.
I officially, have the right,to say. . .
that STAR WARS IS BETTER!!!!!
Ya bunch of hippies, this was terrible! It was SO SLOWWWWW AHHHHH. It's like the intro to Spaceballs, right. The intro to Spaceballs just has the ship going by, & by, & by, and it's funny. In Star Trek, the ships just keep going by, and it's not funny. Agh.

I loved this movie! It was so funny! Good comedy.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off was great! It's one of my dad's favorite movies and it was great to watch it with him.

The Final Countdown, was good. It was a solid action movie from the 80s. Loved it.

This was a funny rom-com, great music too.

I like the Lupin movies (only seen 2), some of them have more content than others, so we haven't watched them, but we love the Castle of Cagliostro (as you may have seen in my fav. movies list)

I really liked Mission Impossible, planning on watching the rest of them.

I really liked Ocean's 11, my parents have had the movie since I was a kid and finally got to watch it!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED FREE GUY!!! So good!

Eh. Didn't love Black Widow.

This was TERRIBLE. AWFUL. De-PRESSING. Ugh, absolutely awful.

I literally can't say enough about Spider-man. It was phenomenal. Completely blew the others out of the water. Humor was beautifully done. Acting was stellar. Plot was brilliant. I LOVED IT. I've been to the theaters twice to see it. The first was on the Friday showing (the technical release date) and it was great. The theater was packed and everyone was cheering and clapping. It was great!

Movies to Watch in 2022 (some of which I've watched by this point lol):
-Sidekicks
-Napoleon Dynamite
-The Prestige
-Tenet
-Rocky III
-Chaos Walking
-Citizen Kane
-The Proposal
-Ocean's 12, 13, & 8
-Mission: Impossible 2-6
-The Phantom
-The Abyss
-Short Circuit
-Thor 4

My Jams:
-My fav. movie is Star Wars.
-My fav. character is still Mara Jade.
-My 2nd fav. movie is still How To Train Your Dragon.
-My latest art interest is thermoplastic.
-Music, I've been playing the piano a lot, I love to play Just Give Me A Reason by Pink right now.
-I enjoy reading, and now Star Wars comics have become more of an interest of the late.
-I've been trying to develop a fashion sense (it's getting better lol) and experimenting with cooking a bit more.

Happy 2021 and 1/2! Lol. What have watched this last year and half and what's on your list?
